tar Trek II The Wrath of Khan - Director’s Cut

In which Producer Harve Bennett and Director Nicholas Meyer climb aboard the USS Enterprise, adding a revenge element to the classic crew as the consequences of an episode in the original series entitled “Space Seed” comes full circle. It is, in fact, 1967 meeting 1982 and the scenario works like gangbusters, making for an exciting confrontation as the genetically engineered tyrant Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalbán) seeks to catch Kirk off-guard in his mission to wound and kill him.

"One of the most celebrated and essential adventures from the STAR TREK universe"

That’s right, Khan is back and he wants Kirk’s ship. He also wants Project Genesis, a scientific BANG which could rearrange the universe. Revenge is a dish best served cold and it is very cold in space. With those words, Khan makes his intentions clear and BOOM! we have a re-match worthy of its place as one of the best Star Trek films EVER.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, directed by Meyer, is ESSENTIAL viewing for any science fiction fan as it takes Moby Dick and blasts it straight into space, caressing its many themes in the match between Khan and Kirk. Swashbuckling to the very last frame, the movie also sets up the beginning of a trilogy of Star Trek films which would follow in the wake of Spock’s death: Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.tar Trek II The Wrath of Khan - Director’s Cut

With strong performances, more characterization, and plenty of action, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan kicks all sorts of ass in its running time. The film is also damn ambitious, being the first film to feature an entire sequence made by CGI: the astounding showcase effect of the Genesis device, a powerful terraforming instrument which brings life from death, making dead orbiting rocks hospitable for humans.

One of the most celebrated and essential adventures from the STAR TREK universe, STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN comes to 4K UHD with HDR-10 and Dolby Vision, boldly remastered from the original film elements.

On routine training maneuvers, Admiral James T. Kirk seems resigned that this may be the last space mission of his career. But an adversary from the past has returned with a vengeance. Aided by his exiled band of genetic supermen, Khan (Ricardo Montalbán)—brilliant renegade of 20th century Earth—has raided Space Station Regula One, stolen the top-secret device called Project Genesis, wrested control of another Federation starship, and now schemes to set a most deadly trap for his old enemy Kirk… with the threat of a universal Armageddon. Both the original theatrical cut and the Director’s cut are included, alongside an array of special features.

Paramount’s 4K restoration is fantastic in giving the film a clean look without sacrificing too much of the grain. The contrast and colors are restored to extenuate the muted color palette of the film, and the sparkles and other mystical elements really seem to pop out wonderfully. Overall, this is probably a perfect transfer and the best version of the film we will ever see. The organic depth of color leaves the previous blu ray releases in the dust. From opening to ending, the darks throughout these four films are inky black and the vibrant colors pop off the screen. There are almost imperceptible shots that are a touch on the soft side, and the optical effects stand out more so at this resolution, but this is completely faithful to the source, organic even, and the finest these films have ever looked.

AUDIO

The new Dolby TrueHD 7.1 mixes are also another massive upgrade over the previous release. With new overhead channels mixed in, a robust soundscape awaits your ears. Again, the start of these films waste no time in showing you the difference aurally as well as visually.
