Death Bitch 2 (20206)

Because some movies aren't fucking supposed to be pretty. There, I said it.

There was a time when you could wander into a rundown theater somewhere after midnight, buy a ticket to something with an outrageous title, and spend the next seventy minutes wondering what the hell you had gotten yourself into.

I miss those days.

Which is why I absolutely love Death Bitch 2. It belongs to that tradition. Ken Brewer isn't making a revenge flick for the multiplex crowd, and anyone expecting polished Hollywood filmmaking, sophisticated character development, or something remotely resembling good taste has wandered into the wrong neighborhood. This sequel is raw. Rough around the edges. Unapologetically low-budget.

And it fucking kicks ass.

"the kind of picture that would have shared a double bill with some forgotten revenge thriller in a theater where the floors were sticky"

Death Bitch 2 is glorious grindhouse filmmaking in the old-fashioned sense, the kind of picture that would have shared a double bill with some forgotten revenge thriller in a theater where the floors were sticky and nobody particularly cared what other illegal substance was on the seat next to them. Something is extremely appealing about that fucking scene, even when the resulting flick you came to see threatens to come apart at the seams.

The story picks up with Alexis Walker, who apparently hasn't had enough trouble after disposing of Dante and his criminal associates. Now his sister wants revenge, and the whole ugly business starts all over again. Nobody is reinventing the wheel here, but that's hardly the point.

Brewer seems perfectly comfortable operating in a world populated by dangerous women, sleazy characters, questionable decisions, and people whose first instinct is usually their worst. The performances and storytelling aren't always polished, and the roughness can be distracting. But there's a difference between a movie that doesn't know what it wants to be and one that knows exactly what it is, even if what it is happens to be pretty damn disreputable.Death Bitch 2 (20206)

Part of the attraction is the familiar cast of exploitation faces, including Michelle Bauer, Robert Allen Mukes, Bridget Powers, and Joycelyne Lew. Bauer's presence alone should tell longtime genre fans what sort of neighborhood they've entered. This is filmmaking rooted in the drive-in, the video-store horror section, and the wonderful period when VHS boxes promised far more than the movies inside could deliver.

Not every movie needs to be an artistic revelation, and not every filmmaker has the resources to disguise the limitations of a small production. That doesn't mean those limitations automatically become virtues, either. Raw filmmaking can be entertaining, but it can also test your patience, particularly when enthusiasm outruns execution. The trick is deciding whether you're willing to go along for the ride.

And that's really the question with Death Bitch 2. You have to meet a movie like this on its own terms. If you're looking for something slick, carefully constructed, and technically immaculate, forget it. You're going to have a miserable time. But if you have an appreciation for the strange, frequently ridiculous history of exploitation cinema, there's something worth recognizing in the sheer determination to keep making these pictures.

Grindhouse was never about perfection. It was about excess, attitude, cheap thrills, and occasionally discovering something memorable buried beneath all the cinematic debris. Death Bitch 2 isn't going to convert anyone who already hates this stuff, and it shouldn't have to. Sometimes you know exactly what you're walking into, buy the ticket anyway, and take your chances.

Just don't complain afterward that the place was a little dirty.
