Ghoulies Go to College (1990)

Just when you thought it was safe to go to the toilet in peace, the ghoulies return!

With talking ghoulies who are bigger and more gross than they have ever been before, the third installment in the horror comedy franchise has these demonic creatures creating all sorts of catastrophes within the halls of higher learning.  And the result - even if you should see the movie at least once in your life - is a complete mess of lunacy.

But, thanks to Lionsgate Limited, Ghoulies Go To College gets new life on blu-ray as the cult flick (it’s certainly not a classic!!) lands on Vestron Video’s ongoing Collector’s Series as #34.  Complete with Ralf Krause’s cover art and Jim Warren’s sleeve art these toilet-dwelling monsters get their degrees in crude laughs with a release which includes interviews, international trailers, and a still gallery.

"captures the area, the generation, and the rawness of youth in the well-crafted French drama"

Oh, Ghoulies Go To College is bad.  It’s really, really bad but that’s part of the Ghoulies schtick, right?  Yeah, sorta.  The original - a Charles Band classic - was a rip from what Joe Dante was doing with Gremlins and, after two films, the series wasn’t going to grow-up anytime soon.

So, why not send the ghoulies off to college?  Professor Ragnar (Kevin McCarthy) is absolutely consumed by the occult and, summoned by his reading of an old comic book found in a bathroom wall, the ghoulies take on three stooges-like personas and actually talk as they set about wrecking the college during prank week.

Directed by Cellar Dweller’s John Cal Buechler (who was a special effects stud for Roger Corman back in the day) and written by Brent Olson, Ghoulies Go To College is filled to the brim with all sorts of college-bound, sex-related hijinks.  The target audience is obvious and the comedy - broad and ridiculous in nature - should not come as a surprise for anyone who has been journeying with each and every entry in this horror comedy franchise.Ghoulies Go to College (1990)

Because, once a "Ghoulies" comic book is found in a frat house bathroom, all bets are off for a decent learning experience. The comic, because the writers say so, secretly holds powers over three lost Ghoulies that are imprisoned within its pages. Once released by Professor Ragnar who uses them in an attempt to stop 'Prank Week' where frats play tricks on each other for a tinfoil crown.

Skip Carter and his frat house of party animals are destined to take back the crown but he is having problems with his girlfriend who is dating his arch rival, Jeremy. When Jeremy frames Skip, resulting in his expulsion, the Ghoulies are sent to kill Skip and any other frats that stand in their way.

Starring Eva LaRue, Evan MacKenzie, and Patrick Labyorteaux and featuring a cameo from Kane Hodder, Ghoulies Go To College is also the first film with Matthew Lillard as every single trope dealing with teenagers and colleges is thrust into your face . . . repetitively.  And, unfortunately, without the clever balance of horror and humor which made Ghoulies II feel so effortless.

Third time is not a charm with this franchise, but - honestly - who really cares?  The Ghoulies certainly don’t.

When it comes to higher education, the Ghoulies aren’t just interested ― they’ll crawl out of the toilet for it! In this third installment of the campy horror franchise, on Blu-ray for the first time, a professor (Kevin McCarthy) who dabbles in the occult decides to sabotage Prank Week by summoning three Ghoulies trapped in the pages of a demonic comic book. Once freed, the raunchy creatures party like there’s no tomorrow, trashing the campus and pulling their own elaborate ― and deadly ― pranks. But one couple decides to take on the monstrous menace, leading to an unhinged, Ghoulie-tastic climax.

Video

The 1080 transfer is presented with a new (and stunning) transfer!  The work here results in an ageless film of pristine beauty thanks to this transfer.  The freewheeling demonic antics from these ghoulies doesn’t show much sign of aging.  The film is dominated with reds and greens that absolutely burst with color.  The clothes are detailed and the simple backgrounds burst with new details and a nice level of clarity.  The locations are striking and the set designs look lovely, too.  Black levels are solid and skin tones are natural.  Shadows are defined and the film has a new depth previously unseen.

Audio

Turn the DTS-Master Audio 2.0 track up.. It isn’t the best, but it will do.
