Kelsey Grammer in a science fiction head trip? Sign me up!
Lars Shrike Walks the Night looks traditional science fiction flicks dead in the eyes and says, "Nah...fuck that." Gary Walkow's indie sci-fi head trip throws you into the middle of a cosmic identity crisis with nothing but a talking gun, an endless wasteland, and Grammer wandering around like a man who's been kicked out of existence itself. If you're expecting laser battles and space marines, you've wandered into the wrong desert.
Grammer plays Lars Shrike, a man who wakes up remembering only his name and the nagging certainty that he's escaped from somewhere. Where? Why? Good luck. The movie doles out answers like they're classified government documents from a bygone administration, forcing you to piece together a reality that's constantly shifting beneath your feet. About halfway through, Walkow gleefully kicks the legs out from under everything you've convinced yourself is true.
Which is fun.
That's largely because Grammer is all in. The man can do a hell of a lot more than deliver punchlines with a martini in his hand. Every ounce of confusion, fear, determination, and existential exhaustion feels earned here. He's the anchor keeping this beautifully weird ship from drifting completely into pretentious bullshit. Without him, Lars Shrike Walks the Night risks becoming an exercise in intellectual navel-gazing. With him, it becomes something far more human, even when it dives headfirst into metaphysical madness.
Don't mistake that for an easy recommendation. This movie will definitely challenge you and your patience. Walkow is in absolutely no hurry here, and there are stretches where the pacing moves with all the urgency of continental drift. The film is so committed to making you think that it occasionally forgets to make sure you're still with it. Some viewers are going to bail long before the payoff, and honestly, I get it.
But if you're willing to surrender to its wavelength instead of trying to solve it like a crossword puzzle, there's a fascinating little sci-fi oddity waiting for you. Lars Shrike Walks the Night isn't interested in giving you all the answers. It's interested in scrambling the damn questions. Sometimes that's more fun anyway.
