Grab your Bat-Air Freshener because this movie is a stinker. This hate note to Batman makes me want to scrub my eyes with bleach because that would feel better than watching this cringe-fest again.

Directed by Joel Schumacher and starring Val Kilmer, Jim Carrey, and Tommy Lee Jones, this movie makes me feel like a dad whose child just told him that his favorite DC character is Clock King.

The movie follows Batman as he tries to stop a robbery orchestrated by Two-Face, who was caught in a freak accident that disfigured half of his face and left him relying on a coin to make every decision.

Batman meets Edward Nygma, who tries to get Batman’s attention by pitching an invention that beams television channels straight into your brain. Batman rejects the idea, and not even one night later, Nygma kills his own boss and makes it look like a suicide. All because Batman told him “no,” he becomes the Riddler.

Batman goes on a date with a girl who’s obsessed with him, and they go to the circus…because of course they do. There they watch the Flying Graysons, an acrobatic family, until Two-Face crashes the show. He threatens everyone by saying that if Batman doesn’t reveal his identity, he’ll blow up the entire circus with everyone inside. Dick Grayson manages to defuse the bomb, but Two-Face still kills his entire family. Batman then takes Dick in and lets him live at Wayne Manor.

Dick eventually figures out that Bruce Wayne is Batman and wants to fight crime alongside him. Meanwhile, the Riddler and Two-Face team up to try to kill Batman and Robin while also committing crimes to fund the Riddler’s brainwave TV company. Two-Face crashes a party and almost kills Batman, but Robin saves him.

Later, the Riddler captures Batman’s girlfriend and Robin, telling Batman he can only save one of them. Batman is smarter than that, so he throws a Batarang at the brainwave machine and destroys it instead. Two-Face tries to stop Batman, but Batman throws a bunch of coins into the air. Two-Face can’t resist trying to catch them, loses his balance, and falls into a pit.

This movie is terrible. The only thing I actually like is Two-Face’s makeup and costume. Jim Carrey is a horrible Riddler, and he’s almost as bad as the weird suit he wears for the entire movie.

This is also the first appearance of the infamous Bat-Nipple suit, and that’s definitely not a good thing. Val Kilmer isn’t a good Batman either. The two villains just feel like two Jokers fighting Batman, and that’s not good.

I understand this movie is supposed to be goofy for kids, but Batman is the wrong hero for that kind of treatment.

This movie gets a straight 1 out of 5 stars. Even though I like the way Two-Face looks, I’m not raising the score.

And if this is Batman Forever… I’d want it to be over way sooner than forever.
