Need another fix of Tiger King? This wacky documentary might be for you.
Not because there are tigers. There aren't. Not because there are murder plots, cults, or country music videos. (At least not that I saw.) But because The Python Hunt understands the same thing that made Tiger King impossible to stop watching: the animals are just bait. The real attraction is the wonderfully bizarre collection of people who orbit them.
Every year, Florida hosts the Python Challenge, a competition that sends hundreds of hopeful hunters into the Everglades to track down invasive Burmese pythons that have been wreaking havoc on the ecosystem. Sounds like the setup for a standard conservation documentary, right?
Not even close. Director Xander Robin quickly realizes the snakes aren't the story. They're the excuse.
Instead, he introduces us to an unforgettable lineup of hunters, families, lifelong outdoorsmen, first-timers, and Florida originals who are willing to spend night after mosquito-filled night stumbling through knee-deep water chasing a reptile most of them will never actually see. Some are convinced they're going to catch the monster that wins the competition. Others are there for the experience. A few just seem to enjoy wandering around the swamp in the middle of the night.
Honestly, they're all worth following.
Robin never talks down to his subjects, and that's what makes the documentary work so well. Lesser filmmakers would have leaned into the easy jokes. Florida practically writes them for you. Instead, The Python Hunt lets these people be funny, passionate, determined, and occasionally heartbreaking without ever turning them into caricatures.
The Everglades deserve their own credit. Shot almost entirely after dark, the swamp becomes something both beautiful and unsettling. Every flashlight beam disappears into black water. Every rustle in the grass feels like it could be a twelve-foot snake...or something worse. Even when nothing is happening, the atmosphere keeps you locked in.
Ironically, there aren't that many snakes. That's actually one of the film's greatest strengths.
Hollywood has conditioned us to believe every expedition ends with a dramatic payoff. Robin isn't interested in selling that fantasy. Most nights end exactly the way they probably do in real life—with sore feet, bug bites, exhaustion, and the realization that the Everglades don't care how badly you want to find a python.
Beneath all the eccentric personalities and dry humor is a thoughtful look at conservation. The Burmese python invasion is very real, but the film wisely avoids pretending this annual competition is some magical solution. Instead, it quietly asks whether events like this are helping the ecosystem, helping public awareness, or simply giving people a reason to feel like they're making a difference.
The answer isn't nearly as important as the journey.
Like Tiger King, The Python Hunt succeeds because it's fascinated by people. It drops viewers into a uniquely American subculture filled with characters who couldn't have been invented by a screenwriter if they tried. The snakes may be the headline, but the hunters are the reason you'll stick around.
It's funny, surprisingly thoughtful, visually hypnotic, and proof once again that if you point a camera at enough people in Florida, eventually something wonderfully weird is going to happen.
