The hilarious haunting of rocks and trash bins has begun and, thanks to the skills of one rural-based, but reluctant ghost hunter, you will DEFINITELY laugh until your sides hurt. At once, Extra Ordinary, an Irish comedy that delights with idiosyncratic observations, mixes horror into its rom-com peppering without losing ANY of its natural flavors. For ravenous viewers bored to tears with most of Hollywood, this is a recipe that Hollyweird needs more of. Please.
Taking place in rural Ireland, the lonely life of Rose Dooley (Maeve Higgins), who would prefer to remain an ignored wallflower thanks to her rather frank personality, gets major attention when Christian Winter, (Will Forte) a washed up, one-hit-wonder rock star, makes a pact with the devil. Virgins to sacrifice for continued fortune and fame and all that good (and bloody) stuff. Little does he realize, though, that his path in the supernatural heads straight to Rose. {googleads}
Written and directed by Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman, this supernatural comedy pits a driving instructor with a knack for “The Talents” and a terrified father, Martin Martin (a very funny Barry Ward) against a washed-up rock star who levitates virgins for sacrificial offerings to Satan himself. The result, thanks to all the personalities at play, makes this romantic comedy soar to new and lofty heights. You will laugh! You will cry! And, yes, you will SCREAM in sheer terror!
Rose can suss out ANY supernatural entity thanks to the abilities gifted to her from her recently deceased father, Vincent (Risteard Cooper). We see Vincent in cheesy (and hilarious VHS spots) as Rose turns to him and his prior cases for guidance. She is in the sticks, after all, and the people there - because usually she ignores him - eat up what she has to say when it comes to the supernatural. She is sweet, after all. She just doesn’t want to come to grips with her abilities and with her tendency to overeat. 
All that changes when Martin Martin calls her for help. Or was he just flirting with her when he told her about his dead wife still being in the house? She can’t tell. But she does know he needs help with his levitating daughter. Focused on hijinks and hilarity, Extra Ordinary serves traditional rom-coms with walking papers and delivers a tight narrative about after life domestic abuses and demonic visits with SUPER special effects courtesy of Umedia Belgium. There are also plenty of sight gags (with sheets!!!) and a running gag involving ectoplasm which just makes me giggle.
