“Longlegs is just a man . . not a witch doctor.”
Yeah, keep telling yourself that. Maybe it will lessen the mind-altering severity of seeing the tall man in pale makeup. But I doubt it. Anyway, Longlegs is guerilla filmmaking at its most . . . demonic. Inspired by Osgood Perkins’ mother's treatment towards his father Anthony Perkins's sexuality, Longlegs delivers a most unsettling mood that - on repeated viewings - only gets better.
Longlegs, written and directed by Osgood Perkins, is the ultimate calling card when it comes to families with dark and “dirty little” secrets. It’s frighteningly good - with an unsettling atmosphere throughout - as one FBI Agent, Lee Harker (a fabulous Maika Monroe) goes about trying to solve a bizarre serial killer case with occult leanings and winds up face to face with Longlegs (Nicolas Cage, in another standout performance), a most disturbing man who claims to know more about her than she does herself.
Listening to what this crazed man has to say won’t be easy . . .
. . . but it sure will be twisted! Love it or leave it, the supernatural elements are present throughout this weird and twisted flick and Perkins - who gives audiences some interesting characters to chew on - isn’t about to apologize.
Longlegs is a thriller that is definitely made for those who aren’t afraid of crashing straight into the dark side of the occult. It is the ultimate in FEEL BAD vibes as things go sideways relatively fast thanks to a disturbing tone which is fastened on in the opening moments and definitely does not come off.
From mind control to anxiety and beyond, Longlegs is high art in the horror department, creating a sense of dread at almost every twist and turn as a new FBI Agent, with some sort of psychic ability, finds herself locked straight on a rather demented rot of a man.
And he’s not about to be outsmarted in this game of cat and mouse.
Opening with a snowy scene where the tension can and is carved with a knife, Longlegs is a most perfect thriller, echoing what made Silence of the Lambs so disturbing and effective. But Perkins leans toward a more occult-like interpretation and stuffs his film with a very uncomfortable atmosphere which may send some viewers right on over the edge.
Yes, it is that disturbing. And Cage leans heavily into the crazy, delivering a very twisted version of a Charles Manson-like character as Blair Underwood, playing Harker’s boss, Agent Will Carter, finds himself in some very dark and twisted territory. Every performance - including Alicia Witts’ performance as Harker’s mother - is to be commended in delivering the tone.
Co-starring Michelle Choi-Lee, Dakota Daulby, and Kiernan Shipka, Longlegs is top-tier cinema, no doubt about it. Forget genres, man. Perkins is becoming one of my favorite directors. The film, marking its second release on home video, is now available in a SteelBook format, thanks to Neon Films.
