I've never been one of those people who worship at the altar of James Cameron. In fact, I can count the Cameron films I genuinely love on one hand: The Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and True Lies. Everything else? Not really my thing. So I went into Aliens Expanded: A New Species of Documentary with measured expectations. I wasn't looking for three-plus hours of hero worship—I wanted a documentary that could justify its runtime by digging deep into one of my favorite science fiction films. Thankfully, that's exactly what it does.

What impressed me most is how comprehensive the documentary is without ever feeling like it's checking boxes. The interview roster is exceptional, featuring James Cameron, producer Gale Anne Hurd, Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, Lance Henriksen, Paul Reiser, Jenette Goldstein, Carrie Henn, William Hope, Mark Rolston, Daniel Kash, Ricco Ross, and Colette Hiller. They're joined by key members of the creative team, including visual effects supervisor Robert Skotak, creature designers Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr., dubbing mixer Graham V. Hartstone, Aliens novelist Alan Dean Foster, along with film historians and contemporary filmmakers who help put the movie into context. Sure, longtime fans will recognize a few familiar stories, but there are plenty of fresh insights into the performances, practical effects, production design, James Horner's unforgettable score, and the countless creative decisions that helped make Aliens one of the defining science fiction films of the 1980s.

The presentation deserves a lot of credit, too. Behind-the-scenes photos, production artwork, archival footage, and well-chosen clips are edited together in a way that keeps the documentary engaging despite its epic runtime. This isn't just another making-of documentary—it's an examination of why Aliens has remained one of the defining science fiction films of the last forty years and why audiences continue to revisit it decade after decade. At well over four hours, there are moments where the documentary could have been tightened, and a handful of anecdotes inevitably overlap. They're minor quibbles, though, because the material is consistently engaging from beginning to end.

Aliens Expanded succeeds because it celebrates the movie rather than the mythology surrounding James Cameron. It's made by people who clearly love Aliens, and that passion comes through in every frame without becoming overbearing. I've watched more behind-the-scenes documentaries than I can count, and this one ranks among the very best. If Aliens means anything to you, Aliens Expanded isn't just recommended—it's essential viewing.

Since this is a new(ish) produced documentary, Aliens Expanded looks excellent throughout. Interviews are sharp and well-lit, with natural skin tones and plenty of fine detail. The real challenge comes from the wealth of archival material—film clips, behind-the-scenes photographs, production artwork, and vintage video elements—which naturally vary in quality depending on their source.

Rather than trying to overprocess older material, the filmmakers let it retain its original character, resulting in a presentation that feels authentic instead of artificially polished. Editing is clean, graphics are unobtrusive, and the documentary maintains a consistently professional appearance from beginning to end.

Audio

The documentary's audio presentation is exactly what it needs to be. Dialogue remains clear and well-balanced throughout the numerous interview segments, with every participant easy to understand. Music is used effectively to support the material without overwhelming it, while clips from Aliens retain their impact.

Transitions between newly recorded interviews and archival footage are handled smoothly, despite the inevitable differences in source quality. It's not a soundtrack designed to show off your home theater, but it delivers a clean, polished listening experience that serves the documentary well.

While short on extras, the commentary is just a plethora of film history talking about everything from Whale to the actors to Pre-Code history and much more. It more than compliments the film well.

Also included is a 100-minute theatrical cut of Aliens Expanded for those looking for a more streamlined experience, along with Inside Aliens Expanded, a candid Q&A with writer-director Ian Nathan and executive producer Robin Block that pulls back the curtain on the making of the documentary itself.

If you're an Aliens fan, this isn't filler—it's an incredible archive of firsthand memories and filmmaking insight that's worth exploring long after the feature presentation ends.
