No human was made for immortality. What could possibly be learned if there were no consequences to the crazy things we put our bodies through? But, snarky giggles aside, there is serious thought fueling the engine to Immortal, a new horror anthology premiering On Demand this September. I mean, what would you do if your teacher shot himself in the head and then, minutes later, got up and started chasing you? Run. Like. Hell.
And that’s the point. What would YOU do with the knowledge that you couldn’t die? That’s the question put forth in this chilling thriller anthology film from Stonecutter. The film, featuring a star-studded cast headlined by Tony Todd (Candyman), Dylan Baker (Hunters), Robin Bartlett (Shutter Island), Samm Levine (Inglourious Basterds), Vanessa Lengies (Waiting…), and Agnes Bruckner (The Woods), follows a series of characters - well-created by Jon Dabach - who must face a fear of the unknown that is almost unheard of.
Immortal, available On Demand this September, begins with the story of Chelsea, a high school track runner, and her nightmarish relationship with her track Coach Jacobs (Michael Shenefelt), who has sexually abused her and continues to twist the knife in. When her English teacher, Mr. Shagis (Dylan Baker) sees the two of them in the hallway before his class, he immediately sees the tension and urges her to come clean. He, being the good guy, advises her to do it Monday morning.
And then, after track practice, things go south in surprising ways . . . and, lo and behold, it turns out the Shagis has a few tricks up his sleeve! Wait. What?! And that twisted and demented atmosphere - where reversals abound in surprising ways - keeps Immortal from being forgotten.
With death - or the idea of not being able to die - at the center of each of the four stories included in Immortal, this film plays with the idea of playing with death and emerging unharmed. It works to create a series of tension filled episodes that result in hunts in the forest, financial fraud in one as Gary (Brett Edwards) and pregnant wife, Vanessa (Agnes Bruckner), come to terms with their newborn baby, assisted suicide as Ted (Tony Todd) and Mary (Robin Bartlett) face another huge twist in their chapter, and a haunting-hit-and-run as Warren (Samm Levine) gets the dirt on the woman who killed him thanks to Joe (Jason Stuart) and then acts on it with surprising results.
The end result to Immortal is a compelling horror film that delivers on multiple fronts. It’s terrifying, emotional, and full of twisting curves as these real-world scenarios get the supernatural mixed into them thanks to the influence of death and the undying. There are demented twists along the way and the pay-off to these stories is rewarded in spine-tingling moments of horror.
The film also features solid performances from a cast that also includes Award-winning actor Mario Van Peebles (Posse, New Jack City), Lindsay Mushett (Blue Bloods), and Jason Stuart (The Infiltrators). Sharply written and wild in all the ways it tackles its namesake, Immortal will leave you shaken AND stirred for the duration of this Halloween.
Directed by Tom Colley. Jay Dabach, Danny Isaacs, and Rob Margolies, Immortal is available on demand September 8 from Stonecutter.
