There has always been something wonderfully fucked up about humanity’s obsession with the possibility that we are not alone. We have spent decades staring at fuzzy photographs, dissecting shaky VHS footage, listening to people describe unfortunate encounters with probes, and wondering why a civilization capable of crossing several trillion miles of space apparently keeps crashing its shit in New Mexico. But something has changed. UFOs have been rebranded as UAPs, military pilots are talking publicly, Congress is holding hearings, and people wearing expensive suits are discussing things that would have gotten you laughed out of the room twenty years ago. Clive Christopher’s Countdown to Contact arrives right in the middle of this cultural shift and asks the question underneath all the noise: What happens if somebody finally admits the damn things are real?
Christopher gathers researchers, witnesses, believers, and politicians—including Representatives Nancy Mace, Glenn Grothman, Jared Moskowitz, and Robert Garcia—to examine the growing demand for government disclosure. Thankfully, Countdown to Contact is considerably more interesting when digging into what governments might know than when wandering toward the familiar UFO greatest hits. There are only so many mysterious lights, unexplained encounters, and grainy objects a person can absorb before wanting somebody to produce the fucking spaceship. The congressional material gives the documentary weight because these conversations are actually happening now, regardless of what those conversations ultimately reveal. Something once confined to supermarket tabloids and guys calling Art Bell at 2:00 am has somehow wandered into official government proceedings, and that alone makes Christopher’s film worth paying attention to.
That does not mean Countdown to Contact always earns the conclusions hovering around some of its evidence. Unidentified means unidentified. It does not mean aliens, interdimensional tourists, time travelers, or some asshole from Alpha Centauri who took a wrong turn near Jupiter. Christopher’s documentary is strongest when it allows that uncertainty to remain uncomfortable rather than rushing to fill it. More interesting, perhaps, is the strange contradiction at the center of the disclosure movement itself: people who deeply distrust the government desperately want the government to confirm what they already believe. We apparently need the same institutions supposedly hiding the truth to tell us that we were right about the truth they were hiding. Humanity is complicated like that.
Will Countdown to Contact convince skeptics that extraterrestrials are buzzing military installations and waiting for the right moment to introduce themselves? Probably not. Will believers watch it and yell, “See! I fucking told you!” at least once? Almost certainly. Everybody in between gets the better movie: a fascinating look at a culture realizing that one of its oldest fringe obsessions might deserve a serious conversation after all. Maybe disclosure is coming. Maybe the government knows something extraordinary. Maybe there is a perfectly boring explanation for all of it. Christopher cannot provide the definitive answer, but Countdown to Contact understands that the uncertainty is precisely what keeps us staring upward. And if aliens really are watching us, considering the current state of humanity, I suspect they have locked the doors and decided to keep driving.
