Some movies are slick and focus-grouped and made to offend no one at all. Karen the Beauty Queen Butcher is not one of those movies.

And thank Christ for that.

Directed by Zachary Snygg and stars Jasmin Flores, Scott Bolger, Bridget Barnes, and Tom Cikoski. The story is about Karen, a married woman who is unhappy with her life and obsessed with beauty pageants, fame, and being loved by strangers. Then, one by one, the competitors standing between her and the spotlight start turning up dead. What begins as a dark comedy of vanity and obsession becomes a slasher mystery, with a body count steadily rising and plenty of blood along the way.

The first thing you notice is that this movie doesn't give a crap about modern horror conventions. It’s loud and weird and scrappy and sometimes awkward and perfectly happy to be its own thing. In an era when so many horror films feel like they’re assembled by committee, something is refreshing about a movie willing to swing for the fences even when it misses.

The movie works as well as it does because of Karen. She's ridiculous, selfish, desperate, funny, and oddly sympathetic all at the same time. One minute you're laughing at her obsession with fame; the next you're watching the consequences of that obsession spiral completely out of control. It's campy, but it's committed camp, and that commitment goes a long way.

The satire is where the film lands its best punches. Beneath the gore and absurdity is a story about the need to be noticed. Karen doesn't just want to win. She wants validation. She wants strangers to love her. The film understands how destructive that hunger can become, especially when somebody builds their entire identity around it.

Not everything works. The pacing drags in spots, and some scenes could have been trimmed without losing anything important. The humor is also very much a matter of taste. If you're a fan of offbeat indie horror or old-school Troma-style chaos, you'll probably be on the movie's wavelength. If you're looking for sleek, prestige horror, this probably isn't your movie.

The film's use of AI-generated imagery will probably be the thing most people talk about. Unlike productions that try to hide digital manipulation, this movie puts it front and center. Sometimes the results are genuinely unsettling. One of the murder sequences feels like a fever dream filtered through a beauty-pageant nightmare, and the artificiality actually adds to the unease. Other times, the visuals are rough around the edges and impossible to ignore.

Does it always work? No.

There are moments where the artificial imagery sticks out, and there are times when practical effects would probably have been more effective. But the rough edges become part of the experience. The movie already lives in a heightened, exaggerated world, so the occasional visual weirdness ends up feeling strangely appropriate. Even when the AI stumbles, it never feels cynical. It feels like a filmmaker poking at a new toy and seeing what happens.

Karen the Beauty Queen Butcher feels like a movie made by people who had a bizarre idea and followed it wherever it led them. That's both the best thing about it and the thing that will lose some viewers.

It's messy. It's uneven. It's a little ridiculous. But it's never boring.

And honestly, I'd rather watch a flawed horror movie with personality than another forgettable studio release that plays everything safe. It is currently streaming on Amazon Prime for free. It will be on TubiTV and Fandango the 1st week of July.
