Scream of the Wolf (2023)

Hair-raising!! And howlingly funny, Scream of the Wolf (formerly known as Wolf Manor), is finally out on digital from Uncork’d Entertainment. It’s worth the wait as meta is its middle name!

Scream of the Wolf is not unique, but it is completely on point with its particular brand of horror that it is hard not to fall for its charm. This period werewolf film is a whole lot of fun as filmmaking gets turned on its head thanks to a lycanthrope let loose on a rural Shropshire farm which serves as the location for a vampire film.

Wait. A legit horror movie with awesome werewolf designs by renowned special make-up effects artist Shaune Harrison (Game of Thrones) has the set of an old school vampire film as its location? Sign me up!

Seriously. The creativity on display by screenwriters Pete Wilde and Joel Ferrari has this movie already firing on all cylinders and the actors, which include James Fleet, Jay Taylor, and Thaila Zucchi, definitely know what type of horror/comedy hybrid they are in.

As the film opens, Peter (Stephen Mapes) is producing Crimson Manor and he is about to lose his cool thanks to the antics of their “star”, the washed-up Oliver Laurence (James Fleet), who can’t stay sober. With two members of the press on their way to do a story on the vampire movie, assistant director Fiona (Thaila Zucchi) is going to have to figure out some way to get this old Hollywood icon to reign it in.

This gig should be easy, but the full moon doesn’t help matters and, rather unexpectedly, the real nightmare begins with the two arriving members of the press being the creature’s first victims . . .

. . . others will follow as the beast makes its way toward the filming and has its own particular brand of bloodletting fun. Audiences will be sharing in the long-toothed grins, too.Scream of the Wolf (2023)

With jokes and a healthy campy attitude being flung every which way, Scream of the Wolf succeeds in being hilarious and full of horrifying moments, thanks to director Dominic Brunt’s ability to handle the horror material in a straight fashion, keeping the actors from mugging for the camera and, with the other part of the hybrid, making sure there is plenty of practical gore to go around.

It works well here and fans of horror films will be thrilled with the results as Hammer Horror films from the 1960s merge with an homage to An American Werewolf in London. Killer deaths are key here, too, and Scream of the Wolf has fun with that aspect, giving fans of horror lots of scenes to applaud as they root on the werewolf.

Brunt might be best known for portraying the role of Paddy Kirk in the UK soap opera Emmerdale, but his hunger for all things horror shines through here. Featuring fun performances from Nicky Evans and John Henshaw, Scream of the Wolf, will be released on digital and DVD on June 13 and only the lucky will survive!
