The Lion King (2019)

Disney's The Lion King not only topped the weekend's box office, it also set a record for the month of July with an estimated total of $185 million which was also enough to knock Spider-Man: Far From Home from the top spot.

The previous record for the month of July was held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 ($169.1 m) which came out way back in 2011. But there's a new king of July as Disney's live-action recreation of its 1994 animated The Lion king surpassed expectations with its whopping box office haul.

Jon Watts' Spider-Man: Far From Home fell to the number two spot by pulling in an estimated $21 million in its third week of release. In turn, Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 4 dropped from number two to number three but added an additional $14.6 million to bring its five-week box office total to $375.5 million. {googleads}

The creature/disaster mash-up film Crawl fell to number four with a $6 million take while the fifth place slot was held by the Beatles-centric romantic comedy Yesterday.

In its second week of release, Fox's comedy Stuber fell to sixth place from fourth with a $4 million take which was enough to beat out Disney's live-action remake Aladdin (2019) which managed another $3.8 million in its ninth week of release.

The horror film Annabelle Comes Home finished in eight place with a $2.6 million take which bumped the Ari Aster horror film from that spot down to number nine with $1.6 million.

Rounding out the top ten was Universal's animated comedy The Secret Life of Pets 2 which brought in an estimated $1.5 million to bring its seven-week total to more than $150 million.
