The Lizzie Borden Game (2025)

“Maybe we didn’t say it right?”

No, girls. You said it correctly. And so begins the mirror game as the ghost of Lizzie Borden is summoned by two little girls one dark night. What follows is a bone-chilling horror film from independent filmmaker Calvin Morie McCarthy (Conjuring: The Beyond, Beware the Boogeyman) as the infamous Borden is free to do all sorts of slashing with her bloody axe.

And it starts with these two little girls.

"packed with supernatural thrills, pitch-black humor, and campy carnage"

With a whole lot of bloodletting in its running time, The Lizzie Borden Game gets started on the right foot, but quickly goes the way of all other horror flicks as the young adults gathered for the real killing are already at each other’s throats.  Yeah, none of them are likable, so killing them all is a must.

Especially if the audience is to survive.  Thankfully, they are disposed of quite gruesomely because - after the sudden and suspicious death of her parents - a detached Emily (Airisa Durand) agrees to join her friends for a secluded Friendsgiving retreat at a sprawling gothic castle.

But when they dare to play a strange local ritual known as The Lizzie Borden Game, the spirit of the infamous axe murderess is summoned… and the blood starts flowing.

But it isn’t all gruesome twosome, dear readers.  There is also some humor thrown in as these “friends” gather for their castle retreat.  While the acting is a little on the light side of the spectrum, there is a nice atmosphere spread throughout this horror flick thanks to the spooky setting of the castle and the grisly murders about to take place. The Lizzie Borden Game (2025)

We so dip outside for a couple of scenes and the intensity follows as the threats of bears in the woods continue to creep into the picture.  This makes for a nice change from the dark trappings of the castle, but there’s not a lot of light let in throughout this feature, so prepare for the darkness to wash over you.

Of course, it isn’t bears these fools need to watch out for.  It’s Lizzie Borden herself as some party games turn deadly.

Starring Jason Brooks (Friday the 13th: Vengeance), Laura Wilson, Jessica Noel Thompson, and Chynna Rae Shurts as Lizzie Borden, the film is packed with supernatural thrills, pitch-black humor, and campy carnage that fans of classic horror will definitely eat up.

Thankfully, the film never takes itself seriously as the “friendsgiving” takes a nose dive pretty quickly thanks to the summoning and subsequent rampage of Borden and her 40- whacks.

The Lizzie Borden Game is now available worldwide. Distributed by Breaking Glass Pictures, the film drops officially August 1 on digital platforms—and is now streaming on Amazon Prime, with additional major platforms rolling out soon.
