You know what's scarier than demons?
An HOA.
That's the gloriously stupid premise behind Hold the Fort, and director William Bagley milks every ridiculous second of it. What starts as a young couple settling into their first home quickly turns into an all-out war between suburban busybodies and monsters from Hell. It's exactly as insane as it sounds, and thankfully, the movie never tries to be anything else.
This thing is all gas and no brakes. At just over seventy minutes, it tears from one monster attack to the next with barely enough time to wipe the blood off the walls. There's no bloated mythology or forced emotional baggage—just demons, zombies, exploding heads, and enough fake blood to make Tom Savini crack a smile.
The practical effects are the real stars. Every creature feels slimy, nasty, and handmade in the best possible way. You can almost smell the latex. Every kill is bigger, bloodier, and more absurd than the last, and the movie knows exactly when to lean into the joke without turning into a parody of itself.
Chris Mayers and Haley Leary make Lucas and Jenny surprisingly easy to root for, while Julian Smith slides into the chaos with perfect comedic timing. Nobody's trying to outsmart the material. Everyone commits, and that's what sells the madness.
Bagley also deserves credit for understanding something too many horror filmmakers forget: horror is supposed to be fun. Not every movie needs to be a meditation on grief wrapped in two hours of existential dread. Sometimes you just want monsters getting blown the fuck up while someone yells, "What the hell is happening?" Hold the Fort gets it.
Is it subtle? Not even a little.
Is it sophisticated? Who gives a shit?
This movie exists to entertain horror fans, and it does exactly that. It's loud, messy, hilarious, and drenched in practical gore. If you've ever wanted to tell your HOA to go straight to Hell, Hold the Fort beats you to it—and has one hell of a good time doing it.
