“Rodney, take the shot NOW!!!!”
Because the dark side of addiction might not be the addiction itself.
Something’s not quite right with Nanny Lou (Charlene Tilton, Dallas) and, when it comes to this horror gem, that’s Grade A perfection. Tilton is both ballsy and brash in her role as the nurse in charge of the Sage Treatment facility, a rehab clinic that falls just to the left of actually helping its victims . . . I mean patients!
Final Recovery is a slow burn thriller which twists the psychosis in slowly, but it’s there and - while it saves the best bits of grindhouse madness for the very end - manages to keep its audience completely in check as regular patients like Rodney (Jasper Cole) mingle with newcomers like Dustin (Damien Chinappi) and come to the realization that all is not as it seems within the clinic.
The film begins with a flashback in which a young girl witnesses her father being murdered by a drug addict looking for his next big score. The scene is unsettling, yet plays into the events nicely, setting up a twisted merging of storylines as a focus of recovery becomes second to the brutal shock of Nanny Lou’s world.
Written by screenwriters Jerry Lee Davis and Nick Theurer, Final Recovery might be holiday themed, but the retribution in the rehabilitation echoes far past the Christmas-themed horror. It’s been a long process to get this homegrown horror completed, but it is definitely worth checking out!
Co-starring Richard Tyson (Kindergarten Cop) as the clinic’s sole resident doctor (and he might be as nutso as Nanny Lou!) and Kaiti Wallen (Ash and Bone, the film features a lovely cast of bizarro characters which make this movie all the more developed when it comes to its shady psychosis. Final Recovery is all about abusing power. It’s timely and twisted, a movie where the characters who want to stay high all the time might just have reason to do so!
The twisted B-movie in all its grindhouse glory is alive and well in Director Harley Wallen’s Final Recovery, a low budget flick which hits all the right notes when it comes to horror. It is now on Tubi and Amazon by Buffalo 8.
