More silver! More sage! Get anything to clear out negative energies! We have demons to hunt down . . . in a borrowed rideshare!
In what might be one of the most original ideas concerning the occult to come along in recent months, Driven makes the most of its demons with an endlessly thrilling and amusing ride through the city at night as Supernatural’s Richard Speight Jr demands to be Driven!
Let the hunt for demons and for laughs begin! The problem is that Roger has lost his talisman AND, to make matters worse, the damn demons now know he is here to rid them of their access to this world.
Surprisingly, cinematographer Michael Williams shoots the film entirely from the inside of a car and the damn thing works! Driven’s individual scenes, both in and around the car, create tension, scares, and laughs as a thundering score, from composer Matthew Steed, hits all the right notes on this night of thrills and spills and demon hunting.
Emerson Graham (Casey Dillard, who also wrote this clever and often funny script) never signed up for a night of demon hunting, but when Roger (Speight) climbs in her rideshare and eventually tells her about his family’s history and curse when it comes to demon hunting, these dark entities from another dimensional plane become her curse, too. And she’s only equipped with a turd spoon! {googleads}
Previous to Roger, her nights as a cab driver are filled with annoyances and inconveniences. With a clever opening that is sharply edited together, we see her struggle to maintain her composure as drunks, teens, adults, and old guys looking for ladies with big boobs enter her car for a lift to their location. It’s an opening that is endlessly fun and, thanks to Dillard’s performance, entirely relatable. And that's only the beginning of her charm in the role.
But things get twisted as soon as the door slams and Roger is in her car. He gives her one address and says there will be more. She brings him to one location, but never sees the shadows in the windows as something goes down in the house. And then he appears breathless and gives her another address and so on. Suspicious, right?
Even she is having second thoughts about this fare. He’s promised her a big tip and all her time will be paid for, so she stays. He has a brown leather bag that he clutches to his side. Something important is in it. She doesn’t want to ditch him and, up until tonight, there have never been attacks on her.
But that’s about to change as the demons, clawing around in their human host bodies, wise up and hit the streets tracking Roger and Emerson. Now the duo find themselves in a race against time to stop these nasty-minded demons from their invasion!
Directed by Glenn Payne and co-starring Jessica Harthcock (Ender’s Game), Nicholas Roylance (Punishment!), Andy Field (Avengers : Endgame), Bill Luckett (Battlecreek), and Leah Hudspeth (The Resident), Driven is both fast and furious as demons are sent back to their original hosts by silver, essential oils sprays, and lots of wit!
