This crime caper about aging criminals is as cozy as a cuppa tea!
From the start, Diamond Dogs - directed by Kris Smith - absolutely nails its intentions. The film might not be the smoothest of all heist movies, but - damn! - it will definitely win you over with its cheeky charm. Co-written by Smith and Joseph Betts, this comedy of errors is a crime caper disguising itself - with its many buddy film references - as an ode to a longstanding friendship which knows no bounds.
And it works, mediocre budget and all, to deliver an unforgettable mash-up of tones and attitudes. If Ocean’s Eleven is your bag, then you really need to load it with these diamonds!
Diamond Dogs is about the absolutely authentic friendship between Paul Canterbury (Nick Elliott) and Rick Foster (Andy Blithe) as these two aging farts come together again to get a team together to mount one more heist. Of course, there are plenty of one-liners, slapstick pratfalls, and tangents in between the diamond heist, but all of it adds to the undeniable fun of this film.
Complete with high energy music cues and an equally energized supporting cast which includes Steve Knight as Byte Size, Leonardo Martin as Troy Armstrong, Mark Wells as Colin, and Anja Kick as Adriana Da Silva, the film tightens its tension with comedic complications which are handled as irreverently as you'd expect.
Diamond Dogs is stylish, sharp, and full of playful edits, tension, and caper-like chaos as these two old-timers assemble a team you won’t soon forget and go about a heist the wrong way round.
This spirited caper might be goofy at times - thanks to the antics involved between these two friends - and it might also have a few false stops and starts on its way to the heist, but none of that distracts from its ultimate purpose to entertain.
And entertain it does, complete with nonstop humor - often on the daftier side of things - as these guys and their ordinarily average team argue their way into a whole lot of danger. With solid direction from Smith and some great locations, this caper is in capable hands and absolutely delivers the goods.
But the heart of Diamond Dogs is always beating in the right place, bringing this caper to a fun-loving conclusion. The film is now streaming on most On-Demand services.
