Two Champions of Shaolin (1980)

Opening with an animated sequence of the main cast fighting each other, Two Champions of Shaolin takes its use of montage quite seriously as  the on-going feud between the Shaolin disciples and the Wu-Tang Clan expands to include flying razor-sharp boomerangs!

"Its blood-gushing brutality is not for the faint of heart"

Starring Venom Mob’s Lo Mang and Sun Chien, Two Champions of Shaolin gets off to a quick start when Lo’s character, Tong Qianjin, decides to leave the shaolin temple and get revenge for the death of his father by the murderous Wu-Tangs.  He is quickly apprehended by  knife-throwing Wu-Tang fighters Li Dezong (Yu Tai-Ping) and Li Bashan (Wong Lik) and learns rather quickly that the Manchu’s aren’t playing around.  They are out for blood . . . massive amounts of the sticky stuff.

After recovering with Jin Tailai (Sun Chien) and his sister Bi'er (Yeung Ching-Ching), Lo decides to get back to it and winds up swabbing the floor with some heinous villains, fighting alongside fellow Shaolin disciple Hu Huigan (Chiang Sheng) but the victory is short lived as revenge is sworn upon them from their opponents.

It’s a never ending cycle of death as balls are ripped clean from fighters while romances are achieved but, as we all know, there can be no happy endings as long as the manchu bastards are alive and kicking!  Complete with the ultimate betrayals from Er Huan (Candy Wen), Wei Xing Hong (Chin Siu-ho) and the silver-needle carrying Gao Xiu (Lu Feng), Two Champions of Shaolin is an exciting (but twisted!!) tale of revenge as only director Chang Cheh and the Shaw Brothers could imagine. Two Champions of Shaolin (1980)

With standout fight choreography and a blurring moment in which Tong is hit in the back of the head by a trident, Two Champions of Shaolin is all about receiving blows.  Its blood-gushing brutality is not for the faint of heart either as there are lots and lots of deadly blows.

The film, while long out of print, is now available on Shout Factory’s brand-new Shaw Brothers Classics, Vol 4.  This set includes another 12 classic martial arts films from the famous Shaw Brothers' library and features some of their greatest stars including The Five Deadly Venom’s Phillip Kwok, Sun Chien, Lu Feng, Chiang Sheng, and Lo Meng and A Better Tomorrow's Derek Yee and Ti Lung. Many of these visually spectacular films are debuting for the first time on Blu-ray.

Time to sharpen your trident!  The battle is now upon us all.

Legendary director Chang Cheh hit upon a winning formula by teaming three Taiwanese stars with a Korean kicker and a Chinese strongman in a super heroic series of kung fu-filled adventures – starting with the international cult favorite, The Five Venoms. This particular action-packed tale of Shaolin vs. Wu Tang fighters is special in that the fifth "Venom" worked behind the scenes while the other four strut their stuff all the more intently because of it.

Video

Presented in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, Two Champions of Shaolin is beautifully presented on 1080p from Shout Factory.  Interiors are strong.  Colors pop throughout, but it is the blood effects - burning bright in the transfer - which seal the deal on this one.  It’s full of great atmosphere thanks to the quick-footed script and looks visually eye-popping due to the 1080- upgrade.  Black levels are strong throughout, bringing out nice details in both the loud and quiet moments of this epic adventure.  The tracking shots are glorious to behold in 1080p. Blacks are solid and shadows maintain their lines.  Even the costumes are noted stitch by stitch.
