Dudes, I’m not sure – upon seeing The Nursery – if you’ll be able to piss alone in a bathroom again. Seriously. Do whatever you need to do to convince yourself that, yes, there is nobody in the shower. Keep looking over your shoulder and lie, lie, lie to yourself. But get out of there quick and, regardless of what you think you see, just leave the damn shower curtain alone. Nothing good can ever come from peeking behind it.
Landing on VOD this week, The Nursery is a real surprise. I wasn’t expecting to be as satisfied at its conclusion as I was. The whole interweaving of technology into tales of the haunting usually leaves me cold. And, yes, this film does attempt that. Thankfully, it is not content to leave its thrills and (organ) spills to text messages and video chats alone. Instead we get some good old fashioned atmosphere as mystery hangs over everything tech related.
We also have, with the release of The Nursery, a low budgeted affair that manages to defy the odds and actually do something pretty interesting with its 86-minutes: leave us hanging in a very satisfied manner. The film is, on its low budget, a pretty shocking little number. It has its faults for sure but overall this film is guaranteed to give you a few things to think about as it presents ghosts and ghouls and human relationships. It's all pretty heavy stuff.
Directed by filmmakers Christopher A. Micklos and Jay Sapiro, The Nursery begins with a brief flashback of a little girl playing in the leaves as a woman, dressed in black, approaches her. It is obvious that the two know each other and the little girl, now done with kicking leaves and running around, takes her hand as they walk to the water’s edge. Nice.
We already know not to trust these tranquil images, though.
There is something dark afoot indeed. And it is not until the introduction of Ranae (Madeline Conway), who spends her Saturday night with a babysitting gig for a family with a tragically awful past, that we get any indication just where the film is going. There is something bizarre in the house. And it seems focused on the baby. No harm SHOULD come to it...but can she act in time?
But first, while Ranae wrestles with the mystery she finds herself trapped inside, the ghoulish presence must slice and dice its way through Ranae’s friends – Calista (a damn good Emmaline Friederichs), Grace (Carly Rae James Sauer), and Jeremy (Claudio Parrone Jr.) – who arrive to, surprisingly, lend their support to Ranae. Wow! Imagine it, teenagers that don’t absolutely suck and they are in a horror film. Amazing. Sure, Grace and Jeremy are a tad oversexed, but when you get a load of the concern and history between Ranae and Calista, you will soon forgive the nonsense that goes on between the other couple.
With dangerous texts and an ominous presence haunting the house, the teens are soon in over their heads. They don't even realize just how deep the rising tide is around them. Hell, not even the forest seems safe. And don’t get me started on the bathroom. Chills. This horror film is developed and wise to not even attempt to answer all that it presents us with. The final few minutes in the film is the best example of this; it is perfectly executed. Restraint in horror works best, my friends.
Ghouls and Boils, start your baby bawling now. The Nursery, available on VOD June 5 from Uncork’d Entertainment, is merely one room in this haunted house tale that you will certainly want to keep an active eye on. There is movement in the shadows and whatever it is..
