Double Walker (2020) - Blu-ray Review

Double Walker

Ah, yes, there WILL BE blood.  Double Walker, one of my favorite independent offerings from last year, arrives on Blu-ray via Kino Lorber and its recent partnership with Cranked Up Films.  While it has no bonus features, this release is certainly very welcomed.

"a thematic slow burn masterpiece of revenge horror that, with its patient ebb and flow, will leave your jaw on the floor"

There are no gothic vibes in this psychological ghost story.  There are no haunted houses.  No cemeteries either.  Just the very human desire for revenge as one ghost, choosing to avenge those responsible for her death, takes life after life in the street-level poetry that makes up Double Walker

If there is any doubt in what I think about this film, then let me be clear: Double Walker is a thematic slow burn masterpiece of revenge horror that, with its patient ebb and flow, will leave your jaw on the floor.  That’s in part to its story structure (and that ending!) and the fearless performance of Sylvie Mix, the co-writer and lead actress, who really delivers a mesmerizing narrative and character.

Truthfully, we don’t have enough avenging ghost horror stories.  Double Walker, packing an awesome mix of blood and ghostly BOOS to frighten even the most experienced hounds of horror out there, is a cinematic delight that is sure to make it on some Best of the Year lists thanks to perfect execution of director and cinematographer Colin West (Survival Skills) and writer/actress/producer Sylvie Mix (Poser), as the ghost girl at the center of Double Walker.

This is what happens when a young Ghost finds herself haunting her cold and dreary Midwestern hometown of Columbus, Ohio.  She is trying to piece together the horrific flashes of memories from her past and none of them are clear to her on how to proceed with the knowledge she has about her final moments. With each man she presents herself, too, the mystery deepens.  Double Walker

One by one she kills the men she believes were responsible for her death, though her plan is derailed when she meets Jack (Jacob Rice), a kind movie theater usher who inadvertently intercepts her as she stalks her next victim. While Jack takes her in and offers her a glimpse at a normal life, her desire to avenge her own murder lingers on . . .

. . . and for good reason.

Haunting, deeply moving, and unforgettable as it pulls out some surreal spookiness, Double Walker takes its time with its motivation and with its message yet proves to be a horror film that pulls punches few others dare deliver.  The film is out in theatres and available On Demand on November 12th from Cranked Up and now, thanks to Kino Lorber, it is available to own on blu-ray.

Keep havin' yourself a scary little Christmas with the 1080p release of Double Walker.

Video:

Shot digitally, Double Walker looks all sorts of perfect on 1080p.  Framed in a nice 2.39:1 aspect ratio, the images are wintery, and chilling as sparkling white colors meet with deep reds and thick browns.  It’s a crisp image throughout where skin tones are pleasant and details pop throughout.  Shadows are well-defined and lines are thick throughout.  Kino Lorber and Cranked Up Films have done producer/co-writer Sylvie Mix proud with their handling of this excellent ghost story.

Audio:

There is a solid and atmospheric DTS 5.1 Surround Track which provides tonal effects and solid chills.
