Amblin Entertainment - Super 8

J.J. Abrams is a bit like Christopher Nolan in that both directors prefer to keep an ironclad grip on the set with little to no production information slipping out into the grimy hands of the leering public. This certainly drives movie fans crazy and likely does a little of the same for movie studios that understand the power of internet buzz and the fanboy hype machine.

Little was known about Super 8, Abrams' current sci-fi collaboration with producer Steven Spielberg, other than its title and a generic one-sheet, until a teaser trailer was released during the Super Bowl broadcast early last month that revealed something about a group of kids who, while filming an amateur movie, witness a train wreck that unleashes some sort of creature.

Well, Paramount revealed to its Facebook page followers last night the synopsis to the film that goes like this: In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

Then today an official trailer for Super 8 also came out that, in conjunction with the synopsis, offers only the slightest of hints as to the wrath and nature of the creature.. and that the military really are pricks.

Boy does this thing have a wonderfully nostalgic E.T. feel to it or what, including the Amblin logo at the front?
