Speaking to a Sundance Film Festival crowd after the premier of his latest film, Red State, Smith made it official that he will retire as a director following the release of his next film, Hit Somebody.

Cinemablend says the Chasing Amy and Dogma director will instead focus on helping other people make movies. No word on exactly what that means, however.

Smith has made vocal, via his very active Twitter feed and podcasts, his dislike for film criticism (and film critics) and often hinted at turning in his director's megaphone. Now he seems sincere about it. We'll see, but if he holds to his intentions, we'll surely miss his unique brand of filmmaking.
